Notice Of Election And Election Rules For 2010

Dear NLA Members,
 
 
This is a reminder that the NLA elections will hold on Saturday, January 23, 2010 in Conference Room 2J/K at Shearman & Sterling LLP, 599 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10022 (SE corner of 53rd Street/Lexington Intersection). The meeting will start at 3pm.
 
Please find below a list of persons running for office:
 
A. Executive Officers:
 
(1) President - Folake Ayoola, Esq.
(2) Vice President - Yomi Ajaiyeoba, Esq.
(3) Treasurer
(4) Secretary
(5) Public Relations Officer - Alozie Etufugh, Esq.
(6) Parliamentarian - Chisom Ananaba, Esq. 
 
B. Board of Directors:
 
(1) Patrick Aboho, Esq.
(2) Kunle Deru, Esq.
(3) Temi Ofuya, Esq.
(4) Emeka Chinwuba, Esq.
 
Please note that if you are interested in running for any of the above positions, you must file a notice of intent by 2pm today January 22, 2010, directed to the "Elections Committee," and emailed to francisononaji@hotmail.com with a copy to ianekwe@aol.com
 
The Elections rules are below for your review. We look forward to steering the association through another successful election.

2010 NLA ELECTION RULES
 
 
1. Notice of Intent:
 
a. Candidates MUST file Notice of Intent to Run with the Committee on or before January 21, 2010.
 
b. The Notice of Intent to Run should be directed to "Elections Committee," and emailed to francisononaji@hotmail.com with a copy to ianekwe@aol.com.
 
c. For campaign purposes, all registered candidates will be given access to members' address, email address and phone numbers from the date of filing of the Notice of Intent.
 
 
2. Only Members In Good Standing May Participate:
 
a. Only Members In Good Standing will be permitted to seek office and/or vote.
 
b. In accordance with the NLA constitution, a member in good standing is one whose dues are up to date, and who has attended at least half of NLA's regular meetings. Note: that attendance at the NLA dinner or participation in NLA legal clinics will be sufficient to satisfy this requirement.
 
c. Due payments will be accepted on Election Day.
 
d. An updated list of members in good standing shall be provided to the Elections Committee on Election Day.
 
e. Standing shall be verified before ballot paper is accepted from any voter.
 
 
3. Email Vote:
 
a. Members may vote by e-mail.
 
b. The e-mail vote must be received by the Election committee on or before midnight, January 22, 2010
 
c. Email votes shall be directed to "Elections Committee," and emailed to francisononaji@hotmail.com with a copy to ianekwe@aol.com.
 
 
4. Mail Vote:
WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCEPT MAIL IN VOTES. KINDLY SEND YOUR VOTES IN BY EMAIL.
 
 
5. Proxy Vote:
 
a. Members may also vote on Election Day by proxy.
 
b. Proxy votes will only be valid if prior notice was given to the Elections Committee through email on or before midnight, January 22, 2010.
 
c. The proxy vote should clearly indicate who has the authority to vote.
 
d. The authorized voter MUST have a copy of the same email for the proxy vote to be valid.
 
 
6. The Election committee will not accept any other mode of voting other than what has been specified above.
 
 
7. Election Day:
 
a. Elections shall be conducted by the Elections Committee
 
b. Each candidate may be given five (5) minutes on Election Day to speak to members about their plans for the association and why they should be elected.
 
c. Ballots shall be provided to members for the purpose of voting.
 
d. Candidates for the office of President shall field questions. Other candidates may field questions at the discretion of the Elections Committee.
 
e. Candidates shall select another member to represent the candidate as vote monitors at the counting desk. Vote Monitors must adhere to the Election Rules and Procedures throughout the election period.
 
f. Election results shall be announced on the day of election. The results shall also be circulated to members by email and on the NLA website.
 
g. The President-elect may give an acceptance speech after results have been announced.
 
h. All ballot papers and election record to be sealed immediately after results are announced and securely stored.
