Nigerian Lawyers Association: Swearing-in of Newly-Elected Officers and Directors
Newly-elected officers and directors of the Nigerian Lawyers Association (NLA) will take their oath of office on Thursday, January 17, 2008. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the New York County Lawyers’ Association’s Home of Law, located at 14 Vesey Street, New York, New York, at 6:00 p.m. The induction of the newly-elected NLA officers will be officiated by the Honorable Debra A. James of the New York State Supreme Court—New York County.
The President-Elect, Kunle Deru, is a New-York based attorney. He is an associate in the law firm of Sidley Austin LLP, where he practises securities law. Other newly-elected officers are Emeka Chinwuba (Vice-President), Folake Ayoola (Secretary), Nkasi Okafor (Treasurer) and Unekuojo Idachaba (Public Relations Officer). The newly-elected directors are Wuyi Ogunyinka (re-elected), outgoing President Bola Oloko and Past President Shamsey Oloko. The NLA’s new officers and directors were elected at the NLA’s annual general meeting held on Saturday, December 1, 2007.
At the annual general meeting, outgoing President, Bola Oloko, thanked members of the association for their support during his term. President-Elect Kunle Deru thanked NLA members for the trust reposed in him and also thanked Mr. Oloko for his stewardship of the NLA and for the strides made under his leadership. Mr. Deru pledged to uphold the high standards set by Bola Oloko’s administration and the other administrations of the association. Mr. Deru expressed his expectation that the 2008 year will be a busy year in which novel programs and projects will be introduced in furtherance of the association’s objectives. He expressed the hope that NLA members will be actively involved in the association’s activities in 2008.
Additionally, the NLA’s Board of Directors has appointed Adedayo Soneye as Parliamentarian for the new term.

The NLA is an association of attorneys based in the United States. The NLA has been active in cultivating the science of jurisprudence and facilitating the administration of justice in the United States and Nigeria. In addition, the NLA serves the needs of members of the Nigerian legal community, as well as the Nigerian community as a whole, in their understanding of and access to the law. Among other events and activities, the NLA holds periodic continuing legal education seminars for lawyers. The association also conducts free legal clinics within the Nigerian community to assist individuals with various legal issues.
